Hello, New to the forum

Hi,
I'm Ali, I'm learning photography and hoping to improve! Enthusiastic amateur at the moment.
I mostly like trying to do macro shots of flowers and nature, but I'm trying to push myself outside my comfort zone.
I started taking photos on my (now ailing) Microsoft Lumia 950 camera phone (hoping to replace with Huawei P20 or P30 Pro), got a Sony Cybershot HX80 18MP at Christmas which permanently lives in my handbag and I've recently inherited/been permanently loaned a 10 year old Pentax K20D with a spare long lens. I'm looking forward to using it because I'm getting more frustrated with (understandably) not being unable to get the shots I want with the camera phone. However, I don't get a chance to take it out often, as its a little cumbersome when you have a toddler with you... Unlikely to be getting any other new kit in the near future.
I would also like to learn to take portrait shots of said toddler. That's going to be tricky....
I'm doing a short course in Introduction to DSLR photography at the moment, about halfway through. I've been lucky enough to have a few pictures published in the regional paper and so I'm just seeing how much I can improve.
I welcome advice and I love looking at other peoples photos!

Hi Alison, and welcome to ePz.
You'll find we are a friendly and helpful crowd, so never hesitate to ask if there's something you wonder about or need help with.
As you say you are interested in improving your photographic skills, you may be interested in our dedicated Critique Gallery, where you can upload images instead of the main gallery (images are still viewable by all members). Just tick the 'critique wanted' box when uploading. That way the Critique Team know you want expert advice and will give you all the help you want. Just read the guidelines first so that you know what to do. You'll find the link to the guidelines under Photos-->Critique Gallery in the black menu bar at the top of the page.

One thing I would say about this, is bend yer knees and get down to their level, so many shots are from a higher viewpoint, and look like “selfies” ..(where actually, what often happens is ...hold the phone/camera on high - for some reason...and capture enlarged foreheads etc...!). Anyhow, welcome to the madhouse, you may find the exits are closed...but we’re all friendly here..

Hi Ali, welcome to ephotozibe.
I agree with Capto, you have a "good eye".
No photographer can photograph a picture they can't see or imagine first, unless they are really, really lucky. The equipment gets older and technology advances. Make sure you are alert to picture opportunities and have a device that takes pictures handy. These two were shot with my mobile
Looking forward to see your photography advancing.

Hi All, I only discovered this site today and found it very interesting. I'm Rob 64 years of age and have been into Photography from a very young age as my Father was into it with various camera's SLR and I do recall a couple of Twin lens Reflex camera's too, we had a darkroom at home which we only processed black and white negs and printed onto Bromide paper. My dad's camera of choice was a Pracktica Nova, a heavy lump with a Pentax Screw mount. When I got to my teens and started earning I bought a Pracktica too, but gradually improved and ended up with a couple of Nikon's I think an FM, going for quality, even now with digital I want quality. I have spent most of my time taking photo's of people in studio's as I believe light is the key to good pictures, you can control the lighting in a studio. Im now of an age that I want to be outside in the air taking pics of landscapes and seasacpes. I had my own Colour Darkroom set up years ago and would spend days in there attempting to get a decent print. When I sit in front of my PC now I really do appreciate how much easier (and Better) things are now, now nasty chemicals to get rid off, looking like a vampire due to spending so much time in the dark.Im still as enthusiastic about taking picture after all these years!
