help im having a thick moment

i have photoshop elements 2.0. i have a group photo and am trying to place another person who couldn't attend on the day... i have tried doing it but the person appears on top of the group instead of behind.would be thankful if anyone can help.

Difficult to say without seeing the two images but can't you just swap the positions of the layers in the layers pallete.

The trick is to lay the person on in the top layer and erase the parts that would be hidden behind the other people.

Another way is:
Select the group from the background in the first photo ->
Copy via Layer (you'll have "BG" layer and "group" layer) ->
Select the other person in the second photo ->
Copy via layer ->
Move the person layer to the first photo (now you sould have "BG", "group" and "person" layer in the layer plate of first photo) ->
Make "group" layer top layer and "person" second layer ("BG" at the bottom) ->
Make "person" layer active and hide "BG" and "person" layers ->
Select the person from the layer ->
Show "BG" and "person" layers ->
Move/scale the person to suit composition.

After that you'll have to make the shot look real (shadows, things that go through person's head ect...)
