The difference between f4 and f2.8 is really what you are looking at. I would say, that can affect the composition of the photo's a lot when you talk about background being in or out of focus.

If I had the money, I would go for the f2.8 and the Nikon lens but it is ultimately upto you. How about going down to your local camera shop and sticking one of each on your camera and taking a photo @2.8, then f4 and see what you think?

If your looking at the sigma 300mm 2.8 prime have a look at the new sigma 120-300mm 2.8 even sigma will tell you even the older zoom is sharper. I have the older model and I can't complain about the quality of the lens or the images it provides, so I imagine the new model is even better and has os and the usb feature for fine tunning the lens to the body. But as above go test them out. You will also need to have a look at a long lens support more so with the tc on either lenses.

The f/2.8 especially when used with a converter, Will allow more light through, Therefore your AF system will work faster and more accurately.

So if your shooting birds, Maybe birds in flight, The f/2.8 option is the way to go.

You don't say what convert or your using, So the above is based on you having a Nikon 1x4 or 1x7, Don't even look at the 2x for wildlife or sports as the AF will suffer.

Gareths suggestion of looking at the Sigma 120 - 300mm f/2.8 is a top idea, This particular lens is very highly though of in professional circles.

Bottom line is price & flexibility, Your call though....Wink
