I'm Struggling with my Gitzo 3542xls.... Help!

I've bought a Gtizo 3542xls. It looks to be a great tripod but it didn't come with any instructions. Now obviously I understand the basics of tripods BUT there are a couple of features I've not seen before (this is my first Gitzo).

1. There's a strange little locking lever that seems to hold in the centre disc. I can loosen and tighten it - best to keep it as tight as possible I imagine.
2. The disc itself has an engraved sign "safe lock" and a clockwise arrow. I can't seem to move the disc at all so I'm assuming that this is somehow linked to the lever in my first point. Is this right?
3. Underneath the disc there is a button. Puhing it seems to do nothing. What's it for?

Although it's a great tripod I'm a little disappointed by Gitzo here. I've spent a fair bit of money on their product; I'd expect even a sheet of paper to show me what I've spent my money on.

As always, any help mucho appreciated.

Point 4 that I forgot to add - I've also got a bag of small white plastic curves..... no idea what to do with them!

Sad No idea what they could be, can you describe them a bit better or upload a photo to this topic ?

The 3532LS is next on my shopping list Wink

Well I've spent 2 days trying to upload a pic but seems that my PC is closer to death than I thought.... Looks like I now have a desk devoted to nothing more than surfing.... it won't play music, it won't run video and half my photos won't display. Thankfully I've backed up everything. Sad
