I have had a few years off photography and recently started making photos again and posting some of these on your website.
Back then I was well acquainted with all buttons for voting and favorites, but now you've expanded these with guest editor, user award, mods etc. and I have not been able to find a marked up screenshot of the base page which explains what the various buttons do or what effect they have once clicked on.
Some times I just want to click on an image but find i can only do that if i place a comment with that same image. what does "vote" imply.
would it be possible to guide me to your page where you explain the above?

Hi Robert, welcome back.
It's much as it was, but users like you and I can give more awards than before. We can vote on photos we like.
The editorial team also give varying awards with the most prestigious being photo of the week.
Just keep posting your images with the vote/award tick boxes ticked. You will then see votes and award's as people like your images.
You can vote for others too, and also give awards when you think a photo is real special..

Years ago the instruction was something like 'Click if you like this picture'. 'Votes' replaced 'clicks' but the basic idea remains the same - you vote for the pictures that you appreciate. There's no limit on how many you 'vote' for.

That's odd, it shouldn't be a problem. Sometimes it takes a few moments for a picture to load fully, and you cannot vote until it has loaded, but then you should be able to vote without necessarily leaving a comment. If you have a problem there, report it via Contact Support. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll find that, along with a lot of other useful links.
Guest editors - any member can volunteer to be GE for a week, via the forum thread. It's a way of broadening the site's award-giving.
User awards - Paying members can award up to four a day, other members can, I think, give one a week.
The site has become a bigger place over the years, but you'll soon find your way round. Hope that helps.

I'll try to explain a few features for you...
Votes on images/Likes on comments are basically the same thing - merely a sign to the poster that you either like their comment or image - like Facebook, if you are familiar with that.
User Award. Free members can give one award every seven days to the image they liked most. It does not lead to any prize or anything else, but it a personal sign that, in your opinion, theirs was the image you liked most that week. Plus members can give up to four awards every day.
Guest Editor. Anyone can apply to do a week as GE. This means you go through every image uploaded in the course of one week and give a Guest Editor Award to the images you felt were the technically and/or aesthetically best. See the Guest Editor thread here in the forums to apply.
Modifications. When you upload an image, you can tick a box allowing other members to download the image, make changes to it and upload it as a modified version behind the original. This is particularly useful if there is something you are not happy with in an image, or are interested in seeing others interpretations of your work.
Other awards, the Highly Commended, Editor's Choice and Picture of the EWeek are all awarded on a weekly basis by the team at head office.

The site has certainly become more varied and that is a good thing. You will however find the forum a LOT quieter than it used to be. My own impression is that photo gallery uploads are way down on what they were (say) 10 years ago, but others may have a different take on that.

Far quieter here than in the past because of all the available alternatives that didn’t exist when epz was born hence the forum is padded out with competitions.

Active commenting on posted images would set this site apart from the instagramms and alike, as there clicking is the thing it seems, which does not resemble much of a community spirit.

Even clicking (voting) is a very pale shadow of its former self on this site (maybe no bad thing. Lol!). Let alone commenting.
EPZ has gradually changed direction since the departure of its main founder. It is a more news/reviews/competitions-orientated site now. I have seen a number of imaging sites on the web go that way. Some have actually done away with, for example, their forums.

@Carabosse - don't you think that is merely coincidental? That the site has evolved with the times, taking into account the new competition which appeared, and which wasn't there when ePz was established, and that Pete's departure merely coincided with the emerging changes in user habit, rise of SoMe's with their share-based concepts.
Pete Bargh was a photographer first and foremost. He often got heavily nvolved in discussions on the forum. So I think it is a modest contributing factor.
However I do agree that it is overall, a case of "adapt to survive". Especially in the age of social media where people upload a blurry, badly composed photo and instantly get 100 Likes from their "friends"... some of whom they have never even met!
The forum and photo gallery were always a bit peripheral to EPZ's business - Pete was clear about that, even in his time. But it is even more peripheral now and member activity is very low compared with 10-15 years ago.
