Morning folks, can anyone identify this piece of machinery found in the Canadian Rockies near Canmore/Banff.

Cheers,

It looks like a barrel fastened to a gear wheel so possibly used for gold washing. The rotatng barrel stirs up the mixture of mud and water and in the process the heavy gold will drop to the bottom. However I could be way off the mark.

Cheers, Keith, I thought it would be connected to mining, your idea sounds quite feasible.

Looks a bit heathy duty and not watertight for washing, which is generally done using gravitational methods. It looks like a winding drum for haulage from a shaft/adit, but I wpuld expect it to have deeper edges to hold a longer wire rope.

Thanks, Colin, I had the same reservations about the deeper edges for haulage.

Dave.
