Re the B&S shot and Conrad's comment about why bother? I think, as Diana says, we should ignore the photographer.

Awards should always be given on merit of the photograph, even if you have strong feelings for the motive or actions of the photographer. I've always remained neutral even to those who flounced, attacked the system, etc. Equally those who have threatened leaving if they don't get awards haven't got them to keep them around.

Awards are in recognition of excellent photography - even if they are wasted by deletion or shrugged off.

Hmmm, yes, that has to be right, of course. Suppose I just needed an outlet for my frustration. Will have another look at the pic later.

Doesn't do it for me I'm afraid, I've seen much better of this type of shot. It wouldn't have taken much to clean up some of the colour abberation. May seem harsh, but I know a few dive photographers, and they set the benchmark pretty high for me.
I think B & S could have put a camera into the tank with suitable precautions and come out with a much clearer, crisper image.
I do like the sentiment, but it's no to a nom from me.
Incidentally, I agree that the politics are incidental to the photography. However, I think it's the technique that's let this down. Something's missing.

what do you mean by 'suitable precautions'

I've nommed it too. We are here to judge images, not the politics. It's quite brave of him to come back and it says something about epz that he has indeed come back.

For me B&S needs to work a little harder, although there are no shots like this on EPZ to my knowledge, i dont think this is the best shot i have see of this type, i do like the concept hence the reason i have clicked the image but its not a HC or a PA imho.

We can all chase awards and though our teddies if we need to but i dont think it is worthy of an award.

Actually, if you want an example of an underwater shot that's been technically more successful, there's already one in the HC gallery, "Swimming for Gold". (I didn't nominate this one, as I wanted to look at in a bit more depth first, but I think it's a better shot). It's also got the context that I thought was missing from the one mentioned earlier.

Yes, these should count for something as well.

Aren't we glad we all have different tastes and preferences, though, otherwise the complaints about images with awards being too much "the same" would be even more numerous...

Of course. That's why I'm standing firmly on this one Smile Ever tried sitting on a fence? It's bloody uncomfortable, I can tell you...

Hehe, yes, standing firm is better than sitting on a fence, I have to agree with you there.
