Isn't it ironic?

I've put up some (sturdy) shelves this weekend for my German cameras (long overdue, but I have no one to nag me into chores), and I've laying out the pieces to go on them. Because German firms used to put on their products the name of the town/city where their factories were based the shelves are almost a map of the country. There's

Dresden (Ihagee)
Jena (Carl Zeiss)
Grlitz (Meyer Optik)
Kreuznach (Schneider)
Ulm (Schacht)
Stuttgart (Zeiss Ikon)
Munich (Steinheil)
Gottigen (ISCO)

and probably a few more if I checked some of the cameras for small marks.

The irony is that although I'm surrounded by Germanica I've never been to Germany, while I've been to just about every other country in western europe. I think I know where I'm going on holiday next Smile

If you'd like some nagging, my hubby says I'm the best going. I'd like some shelves, please...the sooner the better. Vielen Dank Wink

Not forgetting Solms I hope. I believe the Leica museum is worth a trip on its own.

No Rollei cameras, Ceri? Rollei has a really nice museum as well, so I'm told - and nice cameras, of course...

I never thought of it like that before.
A quick look round, and I get

Braunschweig (Voigtlander)
Munchen (F Deckel)
Berlin (Goerz)
Wetzlar (Ernst Leitz)
Rathenow (Emil Busch A-G)

I think Rathenow is Germany ?

These probably aren't

Rochester NY (Eastman Kodak)
London (J H Dallmeyer)

Although Dallmeyer sounds sort of german doesn't it ?

And an awkward one, a gang of three claiming two cities

Rollei ? I was going to put
Braunschweig (Franke and Heidecke), but Voigtlander already had that one.

No Wetzlar on my shelves but I do have

Braunschweig(Voigtlnder)... thanks for reminding me Keith
Wiesbaden (Wirgin)
Frankfurt (Adox)

A tour of Europe's camera museums sounds rather fab, Dresden's supposed to have a corker too, with a trip to Meopta's in Sverov a possiblity also Smile

I haven't found my Rolleiflex of destiny yet but I have a couple of good pre-war TLRs - a Zeiss Ikoflex II(1938) and a Voigtlnder Brilliant II(1934)

and

Milano (Bencini)

I'm a little envious now, Ceri has an umlaut in his Voigtlander, must learn how to do that!
