It's a buyers dream

OK, I just bought the EOS300D for 16 quid and I'm having fun with it, had a few hours yesterday doing some macro's and sort of getting used to dslr's again. Going to put a 31mm extension tube on my 76mm lens and get in a bit closer I'm thinking because 6.3mp struggles for cropping.
But I can't help noticing the amount of cheap camera's for sale out there. Now I remember the days when I could only dream about owning certain models especially when 10 and 12mp models came out and were 1200 quid in some cases.
I'm now seeing 10 and 12mp going dirt cheap, less than 50 quid in some cases. Seeing as were up in 32mp+ I think its making everything obsolete down in 10-12mp ranges and guess what? I'm having one.
I've got my eyes on a few.
It really is a buyers dream if you can drop on one thats fully functional and avoid the dross.

Even good cameras like single-digit Nikons are almost given away, once they get even slightly old.

We need to remember that those cameras were considered the very best when they were first released. For a lot of photographic work, they're probably good enough!

Unfortunately, its also a sellers nightmare because its driving down prices even if you have a Canon EOS400, 450, 1000D or Nikon D60/D80 with only a few thousand shot count, you'll get nothing for it. I've been watching the market for a month or so and seen D80's with a lens with low shot count only get bid to 80 quid in some cases. If it's got a decent 18-55 lens on then effectively you've sold your camera for 20 quid. That's why people are using buy it now options more and more. Auctions can be a real killer.

Blame smartphones. With multi-camera phones (up to 5 on some devices) the days of carrying around a big bag with a camera body + lenses are over.... even for some photo enthusiasts.

Taking photos is something people do every day. Even kids of single-digit ages do it routinely.

Convenience is king. And performance is more than acceptable for viewing on a small screen. And that is another crucial factor.

So true.
Although phone camera's are pretty advanced these days with high resolution, you still can't get the light through to the sensor like you can with a big lens. The camera phones use high resolution to zoom in but you can't beat a big fat lens with physical or optical zoom. I think it will be a long time before you see professional photographers at sporting events using mobile phones if ever at all.
Personally speaking, I believe there will always be a market for dslr's and there will always be cheap used gear about. Imagine in 10 years time when we are up to 100mp mirrorless and the current 32mp mirrorless are being sold off cheap because nobody wants them. You'll be picking up Nikon D80's for a fiver by that point.

I (currently) wouldn't dream of turning up to an event at which I am the main, or one of the main, photographers armed only with a smartphone!

CB is dead right when saying, "I (currently) wouldn't dream of turning up to an event at which I am the main, or one of the main, photographers armed only with a smartphone!"

Back in the 1960s, a higher-end professional architectural photographer who spoke at our camera club told us that he'd just lost his single best client.

This photographer normally used a 10x8 Sinar but decided to use a 35mm for some work-in-progress shots. Unfortunately he met the CEO of his client firm who had just bought the very same Leica M4 that the professional was using. The CEO expressed surprise when he saw the newly-introduced M4 and asked whether it would give the results of high enough quality. Upon hearing the answer, the CEO announced that he'd be doing the photography himself from then on, or else allow one of the staff to use the Leica.

I learned an important lesson that day: we need to look totally professional and never let appearances slip or else folk may not take us seriously!

Many continue to upgrade to mirrorless, resulting in a surplus of DSLR equipment.

Gas and electricity has increased in cost by at least £70 a month in the last year for those not on a fixed price contract.
£70 a month or more has a severe impact on most peoples disposable income.

Or perhaps they are simply disposing of little-used equipment, not because they want to upgrade but simply to help with bills?

Unless you are a pro, photographic equipment falls into the "luxury" category.

But not everyone is equally affected by economic woes. Overheard in an affluent area recently: "My dear, it's so stressful trying to choose a suitable new boat. Some are so cramped".....

Two Canon EOS 1000D's went for less than 50 quid apiece last night at auction, perfect working order. I'd be mortified if I'd bought those from new. It's not worth selling your old camera's, you might aswell keep them and perhaps have a play with them in a few years time.
Bridge cameras are making more money than DSLR's second hand believe it or not compared to original cost when both were new. D90's which are an excellent 12mp camera with screwdriver drive as well as electronic AF-S/AF-I fittings are going for 120 quid on FB marketplace with a lens included, a little more on other auction sites. That's one hell of a bargain because I've had a play with one and they are very good indeed.
I think I might dabble in a D90, for a few extra quid you get a lot of camera and 12.3mp is more than enough.
I wish stuff was this cheap 10 years ago.

You can usually "avoid the auction price floor" scenario by getting a buying in quote quote from MPB, WEX, Fords etc. - and comparing it to recent auction site prices.

The 300D was my first DSLR, I loved it and I still have a print hanging on my wall made with it. It's frightening that as well as being the first sub £1000 DSLR it is also rapidly approaching its 20th birthday, hence why you can pick one up so cheap

A good point.
Some overlook "age and usage".
50% of new price is a reasonable mid-point target for a 3 year old car - and much, much less for a 10 year old car.

Soooo, I bought a D90 with a Nikkor 18-105 DX VR, two batteries, two chargers and a 65gig card, Nikon strap and a Speedlite WS560 flash for £110. Shutter count is just over 8k.
Lens is clean and camera works brilliant.
What bargains there are out there.

I think I'll stick a 300mm on this and shoot some wildlife.
