Latest ACR for free?

I was in Adobe's site the other day to download the latest version of Adobe DNG Converter, and quite by chance I saw a free plug-in download for ACR, latest version (12.2).

I've always thought that the only way to get your hands on the latest version of ACR is to buy the latest Adobe product that offers it. In my own case, I'm running LR6 Perpetual (6.14) and PSE 13, both of which use ACR 9.0. This means that for any camera (like my Lumix G80) which requires a later version of ACR with which to open/view files I either have to import the files to LR6 then export them to PSE 13 as TIFF, PSD, whatever, or use the DNG converter, before I can 'see' them in PSE 13 Organiser, my preferred choice of viewer. I'm happy with my processing software and see no reason to upgrade it just to get the latest version of ACR. BTW, I've used Bridge and never took to it.

Has Adobe now decided to offer the latest version of ACR as a free plug-in for any Adobe software you happen to be running, regardless of age, or will it only work with the latest versions of PS/LR/PSE? I don't want to download 12.2 only to find I can't use it with my current software. But it would my life a lot easier if I could!

Any and all thoughts welcome. Thanks.

I thought they always made it available as a free download.

The question is, is the latest version of ACR compatible with your version of PS?. I use PSE 11 and there are several later versions of ACR that aren't compatible. There's a compatibility list somewhere on the Adobe site - finding it is a problem though.

ACR has always been free to download, however the latest version will not be compatible with your earlier versions of software... Sorry.

Ah. Thought it was too good to be true - I should have known. Thanks, both of you, for clearing that up. For Steve's (and anyone else's) benefit here is the compatibility list - just found it - to which Steve refers.
