Lens for my Canon 600D

Hi everyone,

I am lucky enough to be able to be getting a new lens for my Canon 600D. I am looking at ideally getting a 400mm lens as I do wildlife photography. I have been looking at a Canon 400mm f/5.6L and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice. Smile

Thanks, MyaSmile

Personally I would buy a zoom, why, because there is so little in the difference in quality of the finished image no one in the real world will see any difference and a zoom is so much more versatile.

I would get the Sigma 150-600 C, I have the 150-600 S, and it is a very good lens.

I dare anyone to compare 100 images taken with a pentax, canon, nikon, using the same lenses, zoom, prime under the same lighting conditions at the same time and say what took what

Depends what you want. The 400 f5.6L is high quality and lightweight, but it's a prime, so less flexible, doesn't have IS and will only go up to 400mm without a teleconverter. As JR1 suggests, the Sigma 150-600 C would be a good buy, or if you wanted to save some money London Camera Exchange still have a few of the older 150-500 (I use this on a 600D).
Ok Thank you! Will probably look into getting the sigma Smile

I forgot the 150-500, get it, I had one, it was one of the best lenses I ever used, I only got the 150-600 S because of the extra reach but that is not as noticeable as you think, (and for work), the 150-500 as mr2cameras suggests is a GREAT lens

I also had the Siggy 120-400, this was a very nice lens but a bit shorter
Does the Sigma 150-500mm fit a Canon 600D?

Thanks, Mya

It does and would be worth buying, I use one for all my wildlife shots. You may be able to pick up a second hand one in good condition from London Camera Exchange if you do not want to spend around 700 for a new one

Hi Mya
I just got a new sigma 150-500mm for my 6d last week it was 549 from Clifton cameras.
I also have a 600d and it fits that too.
You have seen the quality it produces from my pictures.
I use a sigma 150-500 on my Nikon d7100 which is now up for sale as I prefer my Canon setups

My motto - Canon + Canon = Tongue
I have decided to get the Canon EF 400mm F5.6 L USM as I have looked into a bit more and tried it out at Park Cameras. Thanks for all your advice!

Mya, browse the Bulletin Archives on this site. The old 400mm f5.6 was his got to lens for birds in flight for many years. There are numerous photos with very useful information added to all of them. You may have to go back quite a bit, but they're all worth browsing, whether they include that lens or not.

Good Luck
