Hi All

I'm thinking of updating my Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED lens. First thoughts were the ED WR version.
Not the PLM version as I understand it's not fully compatible with my K5.
I'm interested in any other alternatives.

Thanks

I belive youve asked exactly the same question on a particular Pentax forum, youll get the same answers as like you, we are mostly on both forums, hence my thoughts are as my comments on the other forum.

Chris - for the benefit of interested members here on ePz who are not members of 'that other site', it would be useful for you to repeat what you said there, in this thread.

No problem, Please find as below

The K5 is a well capable camera, if its just the WR then if it was me depending on the other lenses you own, look to add one that stretches you in some way, or takes you in a different direction, macro maybe ?

WR is only weather resistant, not water proof, how many times a year do you and your camera get wet ?

I get what you’re saying
Just hoping for a wider selection of thoughts, which I would of expected more from another Pentax based forum.

If I'm not mistaken the Pentax K5 was launched about 12 years ago?

Much has advanced in terms of technology since then, including improvements in sensors etc.

So perhaps a "left field" suggestion: how about updating the camera first? It could even lead to greater compatibility with lenses, although you would need to investigate that.

I did think of replacing the K5 but why replace a good camera. I decided that upgrading lenses would be a better option starting with the 55-300

Where does the lens you want to replace fall short?

It would be a pity to replace it only to find that its shortcomings, whatever they may be, were not actually solved by its successor lens. And that it's actually the camera that has passed its Use By date (so to speak).

Better optics and Water resistant would be a reason.
It may be that I won’t need to replace the lens as there may not be anything more suitable, but if I don’t ask for other Pentax users thoughts or opinions I will never know.
As for passed its use by date, tell that to all the dedicated film camera users.
Why spend hundreds of pounds on a new camera when you don’t need to ( have you)
A camera is never passed its used by date
You sound anti Pentax

I think they are quite brave actually, not to be part of the (mirrorless) herd. Smile

Looking at your portfolio which looks impressive,
seems that mobile phones are the way to go.
Whatever rocks your boat.

Thank you. Its only quite recently I started using a smartphone for EPZ uploads.

But I do own two Sony mirrorless bodies and a few lenses - I got rid of quite a few lenses recently because I was simply not using them. But I will probably stick with the cameras although neither is a current model - one of them far from it.

I don't really like the ergonomics of phones for photography.

Well thanks for your views on upgrading my 55-300.
Hope your Sony Alpha’s keep giving you the results you want.
