can someone please explain to me what a light box is, and how to buy or make one ?

A light box is just a box with some fluourescent tubes in it and a translucent surface. You use 'em for viewing slides and if they are daylight balanced, you can even use them as a light source for taking photos by.
If you want one, pop into your local photographic dealer and ask for one

thanks for your replies,can they be used for taking shots, say of flowers or other objects close up or have i got the wrong end of the stick? thanks again!

lightboxes give a pleasant soft "daylight" which doesn't project very far - if you put something translucent on them, the light shines through and can give a lovely effect.
You can use them however you wish, of course - just experiment!
