Like Notifications

Just today I have started getting a 'like notification' in my messages.
As far as I know I haven't changed anything or ticked anything. Is it a new thing or am I missing something basic ?
I still get the 'buzz' notification but that I can cope with, the 'like notifications ' are just doubling up on my buzz.

Hi All,
The new notifications are working then
I've turned them off for now, however this is part of the early stages of the removal of Buzz from ePHOTOzine, to be replaced with a simpler notifications system based around messages.
Ultimately there wont be duplicate notifications, just one area for messages & notifications combined.
Buzz will come to an end primarily because the quantity of data stored has become immense, of which most is irrelevant apart from the recent history.
It's a difficult project, they'll be blips, but hope to achieve a solution that suits everyone.
All the best,
Rick

I appreciate the storage problem, but would it not be possible to automatically delete all but the member's first page of Buzz? Or delete all but the last week's Buzz?
From what you describe, I can see pms getting overlooked, swamped in the morass of Buzz notifications.

Clearance of the historical data would have been the easiest solution, unfortunately it all ties in together, so the counts for the Likes etc come from the same table, so clearing it down would affect the values and other many other unknowns.
That's only the tip of the iceberg of issues really, it's exceedingly complex behind the scenes and needs simplifying, there's a staggering 929,066,778 records in there, that's very difficult to manage.
The new solution will have to evolve to ensure everyone's happy, but in the meantime for stability it's important that we take the initial steps.

I too can appreciate the problems and the issue of storage but agree with Moira.
Would it be an issue removing the 'likes' button, I see no use for it tbh (unless I am missing something) do the number of likes do anything in particular, do they count for anything ? They do remind me of other web based communities and ePz generally is a photographic site.
I can just about understand the complexity of any solution, simplifying anything involves bigger issues.

The value of the "Like" button for me is simply an indication that someone has read my comment ( even if they dislike it! ) and I often use it in the same way... to let someone know I've read their comment. Sometimes it even means I actually do like it... or it might simply be a polite thing to do, for instance in response to one Malc's pathetic jokes.
