My company's IT manager suggested me to get home server like the Synology thingy.
What do people think of that?

Chris, it is what it is - ie, work with the system you use. I use both, and both have advantages and disadvantages. Get a bootable back up, then test it, then go. For what it is worth, the build quality of my Mac machines (and the logical ordering of the parts) seems better than than on the PC, but the PC allows me to be more flexible with my programs and data.

BTW Cloud storage still seems relatively expensive for me as photographers have loads of data. But I think it is the way of the future.

Just a network attached drive really - slightly easier than having to plug an external drive in & you can shove them somewhere out of the way and just access them across your wifi.

Just watched the video on YouTube. Pretty easy, I think.
And my IT manager also said he can help me do it... Happy days

Missed the point there. Sounds like a good idea. But does it cost more than th regular sort?

Not noticeably - I think the "personal cloud" bit is mainly marketing.

Slower than an external drive, don't see how it addresses your problem.

Probably not, Chris, which is why I am still leaning towards upgrading the internal hd.

Just open it up and if you get to a stage where you're uncomfortable then stop and put it back together. You could set up a camera and video what you are doing, or take photos, just so you have something to refer to when putting it back together.

Right.

My existing HD is a 120 GB Hitachi HTS542512K9SA00.

At the moment, I am considering the following:

Samsung M8 1TB 2.5 inch 5400 RPM SATA II OEM Internal Hard Drive Compatible with Sony Playstation PS3
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Internal-Drive-Compatible-Playstation/dp/B0053YLTBC/ref=pd_ybh_6

IOMAX USB 2.0 External Enclosure For 2.5" Laptop SATA Hard Drive. USB Bus Powered. One Touch Backup (OTB) - Silver
http://www.amazon.co.uk/IOMAX-External-Enclosure-Laptop-Powered/dp/B001ALPWUQ/ref=pd_sim_computers_4

What do you reckon? Any good? Compatible? Or you have better recommendations?

The one thing that I noticed is I can't see any enclosure saying that it supports upto 1TB internal HD. Is that going to be a problem?

My IT manager has just done it for me.
All is fine and dandy.... Smile
