using macro lenses on a dslr, would i be right in thinking it would be pointless in selecting macro mode on camera settings to do anything apart from auto everything, currently use macro lenses in aperture priority and adjust accordingly...nb use sigma's 50/105/180 macro's

Yup, stick to AP, and don't use AF.

I agree with Cambirder, Use AP (Aperture Priority mode) to adjust your light setting - the camera will choose the appropriate shutter speed. This is the best way to have control over your depth of field which is often critical in macro work. Forget about Autofocus on close-ups. Even the best autofocus lenses get confused trying to focus on a small subject in the foreground and lots of detail in the background. If your lens allows it, put it on manual focus mode - if it does not have a manual focus mode, spent some money on one that has.
