I have a friend who's been trying to join the site for over a week. All she gets is a notice saying "This feature not available, try again later"

Having tried 14 times over 7 days, she's now on the point of giving up.

She even emailed the admins, but got no reply. What is wrong with these people ?

Hi Rob,

For the past week or so the site has been bombarded with spammers who have created problems of such a dimension that site admin has had no other choice but to close for new registrations in order to prevent these very organised attacks from causing serious problems for the site.
At the same time they have been working to prevent this kind of organised attack, that visibly affects the smooth running of the site and people trying to register, from causing problems in the future

I have seen one report from a potential member who has been in touch, and their enquiry about registering has been answered today via e-mail.

My latest information is that registrations will be reopened tomorrow, Friday.

Thanks for sharing Smile

Lol @ AP!
Yeah, not the best timing with the spammers but we're hoping normal service will resume tomorrow before the first advent day opens Saturday!

Spammers there a nightmare, good luck with getting rid of them can’t be easy. Just lately we are getting bombarded with them on our phones. When it’s my mobile I can block them, but it seems they change there numbers on a regular basis

I think this (spammer activity) has really increased rapidly in recent weeks..

At work I’ll get at least 6 messages every day, offering printed circuit boards from China, new office telephone systems, financial loans, offers to help sell the company, office furniture, water coolers, you’ve been chosen to receive an Iphone-click here...a refund from Morrisons for a recent error..(never shopped there...! ) the list goes on....their research, if any, is crap...I’m “only” the company’s tech support engineer..! (though I could be tempted to try selling the company when I retire shortly....! Tongue )

The messages often include an “unsubscribe” link...but most times I’m finding that Office 365 refuses to progress this, and reports that it considers the linked website as “potentially malicious”...so sometimes I’ve replied to the sender, giving them these glad tidings, and insisting they remove me/us from their database and messages system...

The next day, more arrive......Sad

Spam:
And there are a spate of blackmail ones we've seen at work - " We know your visited certain sites and now have control of your PC/data, unless you pay us we'll delete / expose you etc etc " there will be some they trick into dialog. Some the the other Bank/office365 looking ones are almost indistinguishable from the real email ones.
What really sucks is that you need worldwide cooperation to prosecute these parasites.

Other avenues are direct Facebook/instaG/twitter requests from enticing individuals - or at least enticing profiles. This internet thing is a bit wild west sometimes.

For websites with contact forms and forums its even harder to separate the legitimate from the dubious. and to protect the genuine member base from those trying to steal the membership details.

By doing that you are merely laying yourself open to receiving even more spam, as you have confirmed to their systems that your mail address actually exists. Most spam is generated by robots to random potential addresses, without them being confirmed beforehand as genuine.

The latest variant here in Norway is a mail supposedly sent from your own mail account - you are shown as the sender - and the spam starts by saying - look here, I have control of your computer, I can send mail from your account. They then say that they have, by using the computer's camera, logged all the porn sites and filmed you sitting there masturbating to the porn! Needless to say the threat is to send "the film"to all your contacts.
Most worryingly, this is a breach of security at the mail provider!

Actually almost any programmer can send email as anyone else. We often do it on other behalf for automated jobs. You literally just write the email address you want to use in the field.
Don't believe the sender email is true.

Hi Rob,

Signups should now be up and running again if you want to tell your friend to try again.

Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you both.

Unfortunately it hasn’t taken the spammers long to realise this and they’re back already!
