Need a new lens before Tuesday

I've got 250.00 to spend on a new lens, maybe 300.00 (recent birthday) and I need to buy it before Tuesday as I'm flying out to Cyprus on wednesday morning..

When I first got my camera I bought the Sigma 28-300mm zoom, however, since then I've bought a wide angle and a macro lens both EX versions. The quality difference between the EX and standard lenses is really showing so much that I hardly ever use the 28-300 anymore and when i do I'm disappointed.. It's not coming on holiday with me at least.

So I want to replace it with another zoom... It doesn't have to be such a big range because I'm more interested in the quality than the pulling power..

So basically the question is. What would you reccommend for the money?

It needs to start at least 35mm and isn't necessary to go beyond 200mm

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I shot every shot for two weeks in Corfu and Crete with the 28-135 IS. Although I brought other lenses, never took it off the 300D. It is my standard, non-wildlife lens on my 20D. Really like it. Janice (gajj) uses it as well.

Within your budget I can also vote for the 28-135is a good all round lens in that price range

Edit you might need to stretch another 30-40 to get it quickly

I'd also agree that the 28-135 IS would probably be perfect for the kind of use you want. Certainly spends a lot of time on my 10D when I'm out and about.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking along those lines but just needed confirmation. So I'm off to the shops on Saturday, I hope they have one on the shelf.

Regards and thanks again

"So I'm off to the shops on Saturday, I hope they have one on the shelf."

There are several good companies online that will deliver next day, still not too late if you can't find one in the shops. I bought from Jessops online, they price matched (dropped about 80 from their asking price for a 17-40)delivered next day, for free. You'll generally get a better price online as well.

If you have the wide end covered then 28-135 gets my vote on a 10D. My main lens is a 16-35 (outside your price range I know). If I need a bit longer I either use the 28-135 if I want versitility or a 50 1.8 if I need speed a killer combination that I reckon you would need to pay well over a grand to beat.

p.s. In Cyprus there should be so much light that you shouldn't need the 1.8. However at it's price I would save up and buy one when you get home

Cheers everyone.. I couldn't stretch to the 339.00 price and then the cost of filters on top of that needed for Canon 28-135 so instead I bought the Sigma 24-135.. f2.8.

I suppose it depends on what you're used to but I've just done a few test shots with it and it seems like a very good lens to me.. Well it blows socks off the quality of the Sigma 28-300. Anybody want to buy it..

Maybe not the best marketing ploy Wink

Thanks again everyone, your advice steered me in the right direction and I'm happy with my purchase

In normal general use I believe most lenses produce acceptable results.

Unless you are pushing the boundaries of performance, of course, then you need to spend the extra lolly!
