I've just started using NEF files again and its been a while. Took some for the first time tonight, got everything working including thumbnails etc.
I'm loading the files into Camera raw then onto PS CC 2019. Everything is good after I've edited and pushed them back to 16 bit for saving in jpeg. Is that what you guys do? Just save them back to 16 bit?

Convert to 16bit TIFFS or PSD's in a wide gamut colour space (i.e. Prophoto RGB) in Camera Raw for working on in PS, save a master as a TIFF, make a copy convert the copy to 8 bit and sRGB colour space and export as a JPEG, you can upload full size and resolution files.

Brilliant, thanks. Just done that and its quite easy and keeps the resolution. There are more options too when you export rather than just save as a jpeg.

I dare say it is.

It's also three years out of date.

And that is relevant - why, Bren? Lots of people don't have the latest versions of editing software.

Perhaps so, if updating it is going to cost you something but in the case of Photoshop, it costs the same to use the most recent incarnation as it does to use a version that's years old.

Each to their own but it's a strange choice.

That is true, however it can depend on the OS in use, my old mid 2011 iMac was unable to run the latest OS so the version of PS CC would not update.

Its subscribed to cloud and the other features but I don't let it update because I had issues with Windows so I kinda stuck with 2019 and Windows 7 SP1. I had a nightmare with Windows 10 and had to reformat my computer and start again, hardware issues and glitches.
I'll be honest with you, I'm not a fan of Adobe and never have been, I've got versions dating back to PS6 and a lot of versions between then and now and I've had tons of issues over the years including system crashes. I've stopped allowing Windows updates and Adobe updates because they always manage to either break something or cause my computer to hang.

Roger - I suggest you download the trial version of Affinity Photo. An excellent alternative to Adobe products, and I'm sure it will do all you need it to do. I have used it for nearly 4 years now after giving up on Adobe, and have never had it freeze or crash.
If you are used to how PS works, despite not liking Adobe then Affinity will seem intuitive, and if you like it after trialing it, there's a 50% offer at present using the ePz code - 'AFFINITY-EPZ22' Affinity is a one-off payment, no subscription.

Caveat: if your version of Windows supports Afffinity...

I'll give that a shot.
What made you give up on Adobe?

Hahaha, you make me giggle.
Watch this space, I'm going out to buy another camera today. I know I said I'd give the D90 a run for its money but over the past few days I've seen a few things in the D90 that fell short of where I want to be for both wildlide and macro.
Before my recent venture into cheap camera's, the last DSLR I owned was an EOS 550D 18mp. I remember putting a 300 on it and being disappointed so the D90 will be hard work so I've jumped to 24mp but at the right money. Then I'll put a 300mm AFS on that and move forward. Its gone against what I said I was going to do but in for a penny in for a pound hey?

I am basically against the subscription thing and that it was so vast that I never got to use more than probably 3-4% of its capability. I have a friend who works as a photo retoucher professionally (runs her own business employing 5 staff) and she says that 'normal, average' photographers like us really don't need PS - even she doesn't use all of what it is capable of.
