Quote: I doubt a lens like the 200-500 would be a possibility without progress in lens coating, lens construction, recent body improved AF ability and developments in VR. I appreciate those who want all lens and camera controls exactly as they were in the 1990's are unlikely to buy this lens. On the other hand a 200-500 at a little over 1,000 with 4 stops VR including Sports VR and accepting a TC14e from Nikon was undreamed of a few months ago.

I agree....80% !
with an aperture ring it would be even better!

I never use the same aperture on two lenses, my macro sits mostly on 11 or 16 whereas the said 200-400 mostly sits on 5.6 or 4. Just because, in spite of all the VR, it is still a heavy beast and I rather use high speed and lowish ISO and get that lovely bokeh.
PS Any news on the 200-500 ?

i have been using my 200-500 for a week now, seriously impressed with it, sharp, nice peice of kit. It replaced my sigma 150-500 which i always found soft, probably had a bad example, but this 200- 500 knocks it int oa cocked hat. I found i was abe to shoot wit ha monopod at 500, with shutter speeds down from what i had previously used. The only issue is that on dull days difficult to get a decent shutter speed without the iso going right up, but on the whole weriosuly pleased with ti
