If you've been around the gallery or the forums over the last few months you will have seen changes to the awards system.

The EC (Editor's Choice) has been replaced by the PA (Premier Award). All originally awarded ECs remain ECs but now appear in the new PA gallery. All future pics will have PAs. Pete has been joined by a team of volunteers, the PA team, who kindly go through the gallery and nominate and award pictures.

The team, led by Barrie Harwood, is split into three levels:

Level One is volunteers who shortlist pictures for consideration for awards. Each person indicates which gallery category they specialise in and they are free to shortlist any number of pictures.
A Level One shortlister can be anyone from the site - you will have received a message from us, through the private messaging system, asking for volunteers. To volunteer, please email support (at) ephotozine (dot) com, stating your username and area of photographic interest. The more shortlisters we have, the merrier.

Level One shortlisted photos are displayed in a special area that is viewed by the judges from Level Two and Level Three . If a Level One shortlister is seen to be making good selections, i.e. ones that are being awarded HCs or PAs, they may be invited to join the Level Two panel.

Level Two members have the ability to help make awards. Their vote goes towards a final score needed to give a nominated photo an HC or PA. If they continually award high quality pictures they will be promoted to Level Three (we have many ways of monitoring statistics of the level two members).

Level Three judges are either professionals or keen enthusiasts who have proven ability statistically and visually in the PA/HC selection process. These can be seen on the PA Judges' Team Page.

Furthermore, Level Three judges' votes carry more weight in the award process.

This may sound complicated, but it's really quite straight forward.
From an uploader point of view, you can be sure your picture is being seen, by a wider viewing panel than ever. If you haven't been happy with Pete's choice in the past, or feel the current system appears flawed you can, at last, do something about it by joining the team and having an influence in the future of the awards.

The system is still being trialled and development is ongoing so we are not yet announcing the Level Two team, as there may be changes before the working team and process is finalised.

Please try to understand that we're trying to put in place a workable system that satisfies the majority of the membership.

Thanks.

Sounds interesting - so you can go from a lowly normal member to a god-like PA team member if you play your cards right?

Sorry if it comes across this way - it's certainly not our intention to make anyone feel 'inferior'. Just explaining the way the new award system works.

Good luck Barrie! Grin

Seriously though, this does appear to be a real effort to address concerns. Let's see how it works out in practice.

Not at all Chris though of course I would encourage everyone to reap the benefits of e2 membership and support the site financially at the same time Smile

That's so we can track you down at FOCUS Wink
I must say I do like this idea.
It does sound straight forward and it also ensures that images submitted are being viewed by a larger group of photographers.

Its good to get people involved in this process, as I'm sure the members getting involved will commit quality time to the magazine.
It also opens up a little freedom (Time) to the people who normaly sort through all the images for awards.
There time may be spent taking pictures or even improving the site even more.

Richie.

Just out of curiosity....

if you're a level 1 picking shots from a category that has had no (or very very few) HC/PA awards, will you ever get a chance of getting to level 2?
