I'm watching several Nikkor AF 70-210 F4-5.6 zoom on e-bay, they are not the "D" version, but this does not bother me. Can anyone tell me if this lens is any good? and how much should I pay for one? Many thanks Tony.

Tony - I have one (non-'D' as you state) and its a great lens IMHO. Sharp, good contrast and (as one of the eBay postings says) whilst the AF is not ultra fast and it doesn't pass distance info back to the camera - so what? I use mine on manual focus most of the time.

Paid £69:00 for mine in mint condition...

Many thanks Mike, The price seems very good for a quality lens. I would only be using it for landscaps, so the speed of the AF wouldn't be a problem either.

You won't regret it Tony... but finding a hood for it is challenging!!

Cheers Mike, I noticed that one of them comes with one of them cheap rubber hoods, and it obviosly was'nt made for the lens.

Don't act so surprised, telephotos are perfectly justified tools for landscape work.

Well I can honestly say that I have been taking pictures for more years than I care to remember and have NEVER taken a landscape at 200mm focal length.

Maybe you could post up one that you have taken with this length of lens as an example?

I don't own a 200mm lens so no go there. Vive la difference though, have a go it makes for interesting results.

I don't do landscapes but I've seen plenty of telephoto landscapes in magazines - sometimes wide lenses just make everything look too far away.

What lenses do you own ? It is a bit difficult to tell from your portfilio pictures.;-(

Bob, Of the 30 odd photos that I have in my portfolio 10 have been taken @ 200 mm, and that’s 300mm on my Nikon D200. Another 4 were taken with a Sigma 135 – 400 zoom lens, which is 200 – 600 mm, on the same camera. Now weather you like them or not is another story. But myself and many other photographers prefer the telephoto end for landscapes.

I own two 50mm and one 300mm Bob.

Well I have paid for a few others for my girlfriend but none of them are 200mm Smile

Admit it - you wanted a 100mm and the guy in the shop said it was the same thing.

Never.

I do sometimes sellotape them to my head and run around lights at night making buzzing noises though.
