Thinking of getting this lens just wondered if anyone on Ephotozine had one i would value opinions for this lens its either this or the new 70-200.I have the sigma 120-300 which is great but very heavy plus the extra reach with 200-500 would be nice. I shoot a lot of motorbike racing but would like to try wildlife photography

Thanks in advance

I haven't got one but a friend has and is using it as his standard lens for all his wildlife photography; he says it is a cracking lens in terms of image quality better than Nikon's recent 80-400 which in itself is no slouch, he grumbles that it is heavy, he also cautions against using it with a teleconverter presumably as the lens doesn't quite match up to the big primes ....not surprisingly!

Good luck! Peter.

It looks as though you will get outstanding images from the 200-500, I have seen my friend's images and the quality belies the price.

I own the lens Grin
As you would expect it is quite big and heavy and not to be carried far casually.
It is optically very good at the price point with brilliant VR (including tripod mode) and in some ways outperforms my 12 year old 200-400 f4 VR.
Most sites rate it as equal or better at 500mm than the more expensive, slower and heavier Sigma Sport.
When you want to fine tune focus manually the focus ring turns the same way as Nikon Grin
It does not come with a canvas type lens case. The Lowepro no 5 size lens case is the one I use.
I got mine for 1049 from Digital Depot by watching camerapricebuster.co.uk; though you have to move quick for a discounted price as some offers sell out same day.
For a longer focal length than you have it is a first class very well priced choice.
There is half a chance the 7 year old design 70-200 f2.8 you mention will be updated just before the summer Olympics.
Camera World have emailed customers saying they sold so much stuff at the Birmingham show that some manufacturers are out of stock. For the next 2 weeks it may be a case of can you find one in stock rather than getting a discount.

Len, have you tried the lens with a teleconverter? If so does it degrade the image significantly?

The lens does seem to suffer from being made in China because many reviewers warn that the quality is very variable. A good example is superb but a bad one can be truly awful.

The assembly-line folk at Sendai, on the other hand, seem to subscribe to Bushido whereby everything has to be done perfectly!

AF speed slows up a lot and contrast falls with the TC-14e III.
Detail I find better, using a good tripod, than cropping an equivalent amount.
Shooting distant scenes are best not done in atmospheric haze situations, but this is true with any lenses combination in the 750mm (FX) or 1000mm (DX) region.
AF is also OK in decent contrast light for static subjects with the TC-17e.
