I recently bought a well used Nikon 300mm F4 AF-S and a TC14 ll convertor, and found that mirror slap was taking the edge off the definition.
The price of aftermarket tripod collars prompted me to DIY, so I drilled and tapped hole for an M6 stainless bolt on the centre line 7.25mm from the front edge of the shoe and got a mate with a lathe to knock me up Delrin collar that can be raised to provide a second point of contact to the lens barrel.
If you don't have the facility to make the collar, an M6 nut with a bit of tape stuck on top to avoid marking the lens also works. (that was the prototype.........).
This has quite simply transformed the lens............the photo of the Bullfinch shows really good detail.
