Great lens I have one myself. Acording to the NIKON web site you can't use this lens with any Tel converters. see link.

Well, actually it will work. I have used a cheapo chinese 2X converter with my 70-300VR and it works fine. It's just the automatic focus and VR that you lose.
....having said that, if you want the effect that a converter would give you and the AF is important to you, you will retain full functioning plus get better image quality with the Sigma 150-500 OS lens. But it is fairly expensive if you only envisage occasional use.
To be honest, I give convertors a wide berth. Focusing has been terrible using these things.
Just try and get a bit closer to your subject. Easier said than done I know.
