nikon d3100 what lens to use

2 Nov 2012 12:21PM
Hi i am new to this forum, i have a nikon d3100. I have a sigma lens 70-300 and the lens i got with the camera, when i use the 70-300 lens i find that even though the subjects are far away i cannot fit them in the lens, what i want to know is what lens do i need to photograph seals on a beach, my original wouldn't bring them in close enough and the large lens is too powerful, i need an intermediate lens but am not sure what. Any help would be appreciated as i am a novice at this.

I may be making myself look stupid here but why zoom the 70-300 all the way in if its to close? why not have it at say 150 or 200. Am I missing something?

If 70mm won't get you the seal and some surroundings then you must me close, in which case a kit lens (usually 18-55mm) should be fine. Either way, I don't really understand either. If 70mm is too close, move further away?
Might be best to put a pic up and describe what your after Smile
