I have recently purchased a Nikon D500. which uses the same battery type as my D7100. However on holiday last week I found my D500 wouldnt accept my third party spare battery. The screen kept telling me it was flat !!!! Although it was fully charged.
Have Nikon built into the D500 a blocking device for third party batteries.
Am I resigned to buying another Nikon branded battery ??

The Nikon D500, D850 and Z in particular reject many independent batteries.

If you take a Nikon battery charger on holiday you can top up after around 1,000 shots.

The latest EN-ELb list 59 can be charged via a USB car or computer socket - but only in a Z camera body. As many new cameras have USB charging it is with considering a 15b which works fine in a D500.

Thanks Len. As it happens I did take a charger with me. I just had to be mindful I only had 1 use able battery with me.

Nikon and every other manufacturer do tend to "tweak" firmware on occasions to the detriment of other manufacturers. My D850 does not accept a 3rd party battery which works perfectly well in the D800 and the batteries for both those cameras are the same as your D500. The same thing happens for lenses on occasions
