Nikon AF-S DX 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 ED VR Lens

is this auto focus suitable for Nikon D5100

I am new to this and I really need advice from some one with experience

pretty certain it should be ok, i use one on my D3000.

Yes. any AF-S will be fine on the D5100.

The Flickr D5100 group has a comprehensive list of lenses (nikon & non-nikon) the camera will autofocus with.
