I tried that, if the built in flash is clipped down neither flash fires.
If I use the onboard flash all three fire, which proves to me all the channels etc are setup correctly

Naturally, the in-camera flash is the commander for the other two (which I presume are set in slave mode)

So what is the problem?

the flash has to be in the popped up position, but when you set it to "--" it fires in the pre-flash sequence, not while the shutter curtains are open.

For the lighting I want to create I do not want the flash to fire from the front.

You could also turn down the power of the pop up flash so that it has no significant effect in comparson to the 600s (you can go as low as 1/128th power) but will trigger them

Then set it (the built in flash) to manual mode 1/128 - it will flash and set off the two SB600, but the effect on the overall lightg will be zero.
