I currently have the 70-300mm G series lens, and find that it is too slow at 300mm to get good shots in low or inconsistant light, which is where I take an awful lot of photo's. I often have the camera set up on a tripod at the FOH mix position at concerts (Where I carry out me real job). I am often nearly 50m from the stage.
I understand that the VR-70-200 lens is also great for aviation photography, which is where my passion lies.

Would this lens be worth the expense? This lens costs over $3000NZ Sad...

Anybody here used it?

I don't know how much $3000NZ is in sterling, but this is an excellent lense. If you look through some of my older bird of prey shots, most were taken with th 70-200. I also use the Kenko 300 Pro 1.4x convertor with it and it is still amazingly fast to focus with.

I also use the 80-400, but I would by far recommend the 70-200, just for the speed, quietness, etc. If you have some more specific questions, leave 'em here and I'll check back.

Also have a look at the Sigma 120 - 300 F2.8 lens, it's a heavy heavy lens, but can produce excellent images. Couple it to a 1.4X converter on a digital camera and WOW...

I've not used the other lenses but I've just got a 70-200mm VR lens and I would definately recommend it. This is my first "pro" lens and the difference in quality between that and my 18-70DX is very obvious. The only negative point on the lens would be its size and weight - I can't fit it in my camera bag with the body attached. While the 70-200 VR has similar dimensions to Sigma equivalent (70-200 APO HSM) it feels much bigger to use. I bought the Nikon for the VR function which really does work!
