Nikon Z7 or D500 for Nikon 200-500mm Lens ?

I'm searching best combination for my Nikon 200-500mm Lens, Nikon Z7's DX Crop would be around 20 MP, which is similar to D500's file, then if we ignore budget, which camera will be best between Z7 or D500 ?

Hi the Z7 sounds nice and there is also the need for an expensive memory card and couple of spare batteries but the Pixel count will trump the D500, I have the D500 + the 200/500 and it is second to the D850 because of the pixel cropping the higher pixel count allows, so bit of a 6of one half a dozen of the other situation, but I would have the Z7 if I could...

Owning both bodies the 500 PF balances well on either body.

The D500 new is around 1,500 and the Z7 with FTZ adaptor is more than double at around 3,500.
For the time being a free XQD card is included in a package with the FTZ adaptor and S 24-70 - with a price tag of 4,100 and a waiting list.

The D500 has 10 fps with a big buffer - the Z7 does not.

The Z 7 viewfinder can be dramatically brighter, especially with an f5.6 or with TC f8 combination.

The D500 has more Group AF options. The Z 7 has focus tracking (including recomposing) within the frame - using a frame area about the size of a Group 9 AF selection.

Most Pro and Premier Nikon dealers hold a demo Z7. My suggestion is try the 2 bodies side by side if you can.

I have deliberately avoided DSLR v ML comment - because I find using each a different shooting experience, and each with plusses and minuses.
What you shoot, how you shoot and what with only you can decide.

Only 2 weeks with the Z7 is not long.
My initial view is for fast action the D500 has very strong plusses and for slower considered photography the Z7 has very strong plusses, plus 45 MP when you can get close.

In the current Amateur Photographer there is some useful "format resolution" information in the Z7 test.

The comment is made that the Z7 reached 5,000 lines picture height the way they test (using image-engineering.de software) and that the most that can be expected from 24 MP with the best lenses is 4,000. This is a useful starting point comparing 20 MP resolution to 45 MP.

ephotozine use Imatest which, while not identical, seems to produce similar results to image-engineering.

You haven't said what you use your lens for, and if you have other lenses and cameras you use, so I can't see how anyone can advise you.

If your interests are macro and distant wildlife such as birds, then the D500 might be better due to the AF. There are indications that the Z7 is not so good for birds in flight, though detailed reviews from bird photographers are as yet lacking.

Do you need high resolution? Or would you want to use a Z7 in DX crop, and full frame but with one of the smaller raw file formats?

Alternatively, what does the Z7 give you that appeals? A D500 and a used D610 would do birds in flight and landscapes nicely and much more cheaply. Just a thought.
