Olympus EM10 mkii or mkiii?

Hi all...

I currently have the EM5 and am perfectly happy with it...have a little money 'sloshing' around and considering an upgrade to either of these two models ( or is there a better option out there?). I've had a brief read of the reviews and can't see an enormous difference on paper.

Is there anyone using one of these?

The WiFi on the iii would, in principle, be nice to have, but does it really perform? Having to upload to a pc for post production is a little frustrating, but would probably mean I would have to upgrade my tablet or buy a laptop... probably can't do both..

My pf is eclectic, and my main usage is for travel photography.

Any advice would be appreciated

Regards Jeff 😁

Ps. Mpb sell the ii for £204, the iii for £294... that's probably the price range I would be looking at.

Jeff,

I've a MK ii (and previously a i). All three versions have wifi connection.
Not 100% sure but I believe the only enhancement from ii to iii was the addition of 4K video.
I believe the E-M5 has 5 axis stabilisation, which was the reason I went from my mk i to ii.
I think the only benefits you'll see is the built in flash (which is handy) along with the wifi connectivity (again very useful)
What you would lose is weather sealing, never an issue for me as a fine weather photographer.

I have both the EM10 mk2 and EM10 mk3, both have wifi which works perfectly well with my tablet,But when downloading to me desk top computer I plug the SD card in it is much quicker.
Both cameras are excellent, although I prefer the mk 2.

During several surfing session at the camera dealers and E Bay, I couldn't help noticing the rather unusual numbers of used Olympus O-MD EM-10 Mk 2 for sale, a high proportion with very low shutter counts, Makes me wonder if there was something the previous owners didn't like about the camera. I talked to several dealers about this who said a few were upgrading but many had jumped ship to other brands/formats.

I had a Mkii and it's lovely camera, it was an upgrade from a Mki due to IBS improvement.
I've had several Olympus cameras over the years and I'd normally consider buying the previous variant as a new one is released.

However I changed this time to an E-M5iii as Olympus Cameras is changing ownership and I wanted to get one before any changes in manufacturing practices are implemented (I am of course making assumptions here) that may impact quality.

The E-M10 Mkii will be a good prices as the Mkiv is now available and the price slots will all move down accordingly.
If you are thinking of one....
The Mkii IBS is much better than the Mki
The Mkiii is only worth the extra if you want higher quality video.
(my opinion of course and other will/may disagree)
I looked at the Mkiv but then went for the E-M5iii

Hi Peter.. thanks for your input. I went for the MK2 in the end...and I've been pleased with it so far. It doesn't sit so comfortably as the EM5 but the added whistles more than make up for it. I am particularly pleased with the WiFi functionality which has allowed me to escape from Lightroom and do most of my post production on a tablet.

Take care and try and have a Merry Christmas 😁

Regards Jeff

PS. Thanks Dave

Thanks guys, You won't believe this but I still use my old E-510 with the 14-54 2.8 Lens, its only 10 mp but takes great pics. I will look at a used EM10 in the new year, i'm a stills only person, not video. Have a safe and merry Christmas

Jeff is spot on about the E-M10i & ii grip.
I had the additional grip and it made a great addition, especially with the 75-300 fitted.
The E-M5iii fits nicely in my hand straight out of the box.

I should think a decent grip is important when you have a big and possibly heavy lens on the camera, Its this aspect where the deeply contoured grip and larger bodies of APS-C DSLR cameras score,
