Ok, I need your help: I just bought the new fancy mega zoom compact from olympus and got the first set of pictures back, when I noticed that it alters the proportions of the picture in any zoom setting - it seems that "the whole frame is sucked in the centre" as a friend commented. Are we both paranoid, is the specific camera faulty or is it a zoom side-effect? Any feedback will be useful...

It sounds as though your camera is exhbiting pincushion distortion. While this is quite common in compact zoom lenses, it should not be at the level where it ruins photos. I would suggest taking your camera and some examples of the problem back to where you bought it, and ask them for advice.

Good luck, Will.
