Olympus OM10 problem

I recently purchased a used Olympus OM10. When I fit the batteries (2 x LR44) the camera, which has no film in it, gives a series of beeps (beep...beep...beep......etc etc). Switching the selector dial to off dosen't kill the beeping but produces a continuous beep. The only way to stop the beeping is to remove the batteries. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong ?

If I remember correctly the camera beeps when you insert the batteries if the switch is turned to selector dial. This is for ensuring the batteries are fitted correctly.
Is the dial set to this? if so turn it to on.
Ken
ps, try turning the camera off and then inserting the batteries and then turn it to selector dial.
If the camera still beeps there is a electrical fault I'm afraid. Also check the battery cover and look inside the batter chamber to see if they are clean.

I don't think that that can be right Ken.
If my memory serves me correctly, the batteries have to be inserted correctly for the camera to make any sound at all. If they're in wrongly, ie. one's upside down, there won't be a circuit so nothing will work at all.
Quote:but which switch are you refering to when you say ".....if the switch is turned to selector dial." ?
I don't get that either.

The beep normally only occurs when the camera is set to self time or to the battery check position. It sounds like there may be a fault. Try moving the selector from off to check back and forward a few times to see if it clears the error. If not you may have bought a duff item. Does the shutter fire? And when it does does the mirror lift. The particular model had problems with shutter when the magnets get dusty

Just had a look at an on-line instruction instruction manual it states, The camera beeps to ensure the batteries are inserted correctly. I don't think that I suggested that the batteries were inserted incorrectly?
I meant to say the selector switch is turned to check it's been quite some time since I've had/seen one of these models.
Ken,
Copy of some of the info on the on-line instruction book
INSERTING THE BATTERIES
Remove the cover of the battery chamber. Insert two 1.5V alkaline-manganese batteries
LR44 (A76).
Replace the cover.
(NOTE)
Two 1.5V silver oxide batteries SR44 (Eveready
EPX-76) or equivalents can be also used.
9(Attention)
If no sound is heard and the light does not turn
on, the batteries have not been correctly inserted,
or their charge is exhausted. In this case they must
be replaced.

Thanks to all for the information. I have a copy of the manual for the OM10 and as far as I can see the batteries are inserted correctly (both positives (+) facing toward the screw cap).
After inserting the batteries in every position of the selecter switch except 'CHECK' I get a series of beeps, in the 'CHECK' position I get a continous tone (I cannot remember just now what the light does). I have tried another set of batteries and I get the same thing. May be I should leave it to see if the self timer fires ?

I think that the constant tone when you hold the selector on "check" is what's supposed to happen. The idea being that you only go to that position for long enough to hear it, then release it. I think also, that the light does much the same and only illuminates whilst the continuous bleep is sonding.
It's the bleep you're getting everywhere else that doesn't seem right.
As Pete has said "does the camera work at all?"

BEEP PROBLEM CLEARED !
Very many thanks from this 'Olympus OM novice' for all the assistance I have received. The comment above from 'Pete' about the self timer was the trigger, I put the barreries back in, waited for the advised 12 seconds for the shutter to fire and when it got to 20 seconds with no shutter action and it still beeping I pressed the shutter release and hey presto the shutter fired the beeping stopped and all appears to now be OK. I assume what had happened was the previous set of batteries (before I got the camera), must have died in the middle of a 'self timer' operation and this was rememberd and confused the camera's systems.
A great forum, I shall stay around.
Thanks again - Jon'
