I have never taken my camera unto the beach to mess about in the middle of the night. The type of stuff I'm thinking of is maybe better not seen, never mind photographed...

Dropped my Nikon D800 with Tamron 90 and SB400 today, Thankfully it landed on the body of the camera (actually on the tripod plate) and all tech survived unscathed. Had it landed on the plastic of the lens or flash I don't think I would have been so fortunate.

Turns out the SB400 flash gun was damaged after all - power switch broke off - managed to switch on with a mini screw driver and now it's permanenty on - have to yank the batteries to power off. No great hardship.
