Peak Design Tripod

Anyone else considering this radical travel tripod from Peak Design?
Its a Kickstarter project with about $3 million already pledged.

I like the look of it but finding it hard to justify adding another tripod to my growing collection, also the price of the Carbon Fibre model seems way over the top compared to the Aluminium version.
Thoughts?

No, I am not at all interested.
I gave up on centre column tripods 3 years ago now and doubt I would go back to using one regularly.
The ball head with the ring to lock / unlock appears to be similar to Arca Swiss' P0
I do have Peak's straps with the anchor attachments so some of their ideas are great but, for me, not this tripod

Might this be "the Emperors new clothes" where fashionable group behaviour leads many to jump on the bandwagon to feel that they share in success of others?
It does look to be a very nice fold up tripod and does look to meet the brief of being very small folded up. I like the short head height. The marketing page looks brilliant. I'm sure if i owned ne i'd use it and it would be fine.
I'd reckon it would be very good and meet the needs of most that will buy it and will probably last for ages.
However, in future side by side tests i'd also reckon it comes out as expensive against the competition.
So no its not on my amazon wish list, but mostly as i don't really have a need for one at the moment.
I wonder if camera's and accessories are the new luxury gadget now that the top end phone market is saturating.

Quote:Heavier than the Manfrotto Befree, more expensive and being a five section the bottom legs will be like cocktail sticks.
All true, in fact my first thought after watching the Kickstarter video was how thin those bottom sections are.. but having just looked at the Befree for the first time (online) the Peak one looks considerably smaller (width) when closed up.

Quote:I’m sure you’re right, Bri (in fact it’s their big ISP, so you are) but is that a deal breaker?
I guess for anyone who wants to stow it away, it might be important. I'm looking for something that is shorter than my current two Manfrottos, so it can strap securely to my smaller camera bag, rather than have the top sticking up 12 inches and swinging around like mad.
For me, as it would be strapped to the outside of the bag, width isn't as important - certainly wouldn't justify double the price.

It is interesting and, if I needed a new tripod, I would look at reviews and consider it. However, volume is not an issue for me but weight is. In the past I tried a low weight low volume tripod and just caught my camera as it blew over on a windy day. I now use a Manfrotto which is fine even if not perfect. Like many, I only use a tripod when I have to (last Saturday in Wells Cathedral) and may not use it again for months. I do have a monopod which I sometimes take on some outings. If I had an assistant to carry my kit he/she would probably always take a tripod (and lots of other kit) but I have to just carry the minimum. It was a useful tip anyway so thanks.

Last night I watched a handful of reviews on Youtube and to be honest I am more confused than before I watched them!
Reviewers seem to be at polar opposites, some are loving it (with minor reservations) and some are really hating it.
I think if it was more affordable I would give it a go, but to have to pay for it in July and wait until December for delivery is not a good deal, especially at the price of the Carbon Fibre model.
I will wait for it to hit the market and get some of the bugs ironed out and possibly look at Mk2
