Umm! I mentioned this about 6-8 months ago when I first came here, and the idea was definitely pooh hooed! 
I was told that if people wanted to be contacted, they would leave their e-mail address! (can you believe they would with all the spamming going on!) I visit several groups, I think they all have the facilty you are proposing, and I've never seen it abused yet. Like you, I think it's a useful tool, but you'll be fighting an uphill battle here! And don't suggest "smileys", whatever you do!

i'm with edward. i don't mind reading what others have to say to each other unless it's a secret. might make me think too, and i might unexpectedly have something to ad.
