Photograph stuck to glass

Can anyone offer any advice, please?

I'm trying to remove a photo taken almost 30 years ago from its frame to put in a new frame, and the print is (partially) stuck to the glass. It's slightly torn as a result of initially trying to remove it. Any tips on how best to separate print from glass without causing further damage?

Thanks in advance.

Lots of suggestions on line, from freezing, soaking or blow drying.

Very gently warm the glass with a hair-dryer (lowest warmth setting) on the non-photo side of the glass, is one method I recently read about that the user said worked like a dream...

Before you do anything take a photo of the photo in the highest resolution possible.

That way if anything goes wrong you can use the digital version to produce a new print.

This of course assumes you don't have the negative but even if you do it's good to have a digital backup.

I agree with Carabosse about copying the photo first !….then perhaps try
holding the print over a source of gentle steam, & watch the effect through
the glass side for loosening of the print (hopefully) holding the loose part
with long set of tweezers perhaps wearing rubber gloves against the hot
steam !…..just a suggestion, but I reckon it will work ??.WinkGrin

Thanks to all. I visited a local art gallery; the framer reckoned it was beyond saving BUT he offered to cut the glass down to the size of the photo for easier re-framing in another frame. The only drawback is I can't have a mount this way, but I can live with that.

Thanks again everyone!

It is always best when framing to put a mount on the photo to stop them sticking to the glass, so if you do manage to remove it make sure you have a decent mount when re-.framing

Hmm... but what happens if the glass breaks, across the photo, as it is being cut? Not beyond the bounds of possibility.

Definitely get some decent (ie printable) photos of the photo before you let someone else chop it around.

We used to 'glaze' glossy 'wet' photos on very clean glass or polished stainless steel. Presumably the 30? year old photo involved is an emulsion based item not a print from a digital printer?
In that case a soak in a water bath should release the print. It may take several days but the water will eventually get between the print and the glass. Do not try to force the process as it will soften the emulsion layer, handle & dry with care..
The base paper will probably curl up afterwards.
