Photographing "ordinary" people

Models are great, they look amazing, know 10001 different poses which they can work through so you get loads of variety, and are usually pretty patient types - especially if you're paying them.

"Ordinary" people on the other hand usually don't have much experience, stand awkwardly and really have no idea what to do - where to put their arms, where to look... or anything like that.

What tips/tricks/ideas do people use to get great shots of ordinary people.... ?

Magazine tear sheets can help - I find if the subject has some kind of reference as to how they should be looking, the results are noticeably better.

Alternatively, tell them to pretend to be a model Smile

I'll try that, but as the French seem to like prunes they may just look hungry

Getting them to do daft things, or think of stuff, often gets a decent reaction too. You only need 1/100th of sec of daftness if you're quick Wink

Tell them to pull their stomachs in, gets a reaction and a laugh most times.
