Quote:Can anyone explain why if you seek Critique by posting in the Critique Gallery does that bar you from getting awards and votes in order that you can gauge the general response to your image?

I guess if votes and awards are permitted in the critique gallery, the main gallery will be empty...It will encourage elaborate comments but at the same time it could bring a huge burden on the Critique Team, but that could easily be sorted out...

That's an almighty assumption on your part.
Do you honestly think that the main gallery would be empty because all members would switch from it and upload in the Critique gallery instead.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As I see it most members seem to be happy as things are and most are not seeking Critique, although the option for Good Critique is on a members comment and ANYONE can use that.

A quick look in the C gallery shows that only 13 images have been uploaded to it in January

The Critique team do a great job,but to expect them to review every image uploaded would be an impossible task. I don't know why you are pushing this idea.SadSadSad

I have followed this thread from the start Somnath and watched how views and directions have changed from peoples posts re awards.
However from my point of view for your suggestion to work it would need huge amounts of members to upload into the Critique gallery instead of main gallery. That will never happen.

He's never suggested that everyone would have to upload to the critique gallery. If you had followed the conversation you'd know that it's not necessary to do that.

To summarise, the OP wanted to see critique on awarded images in order to understand what makes them worthy, to find out what it was that caught the Editor's eye and to learn from that.

There was a discussion about whether it's fair to critique images when they haven't been put into the Critique Gallery (which if they were would mean they'd be unlikely to get votes and awards anyway)

It was pointed out that the terms and conditions say that when you upload you should be prepared for constructive criticism.

I think we are all agreed that it would be okay for an editor, if they chose to, when awarding an image to say a few words as to what it was that they liked about it and, if possible, what techniques people can emulate to improve their own images.

If you don't point out diagonals, thirds, leading lines, triangles etc in winning images to illustrate why they can improve composition (positive critique) then you are only going to be pointing them out when people didn't use them but maybe should have (possibly negative critique).

I can see how people would learn from the process. Instead of them looking at winning images and thinking: "I've got the same kit, sometimes even visit the same location but why is the awarded or winning image somehow more eye catching than mine. I agree it's better but I wish I knew the secret, the technique that makes it so"

Bri you've commented "The Critique team do a great job,but to expect them to review every image uploaded would be an impossible task. I don't know why you are pushing this idea"

Bri, if you concluded that was what was suggested then you have totally misinterpreted what was said and have totally overreacted when you started bashing the exclamation point key. Where did the OP ask for that?

Him saying that thee main gallery being empty was an exaggeration, I would grant you that.

It would depend how it was implemented during upload. If people had to to tick boxes to turn votes off, critique off and awards off on every upload I could imagine a lot more images than 13 ending up in the critique queue.

Nobody is asking for this anyway.

I hope the staff will participate here; but regarding the Critique Team, I'll just explain that there are six of us, which is a nice number. We have different backgrounds and interests, between us we can cover the CG. So to answer the question, people are invited to join when someone drops out and their contribution needs to be replaced.

We look for a number of things that might not be immediately apparent - a sense of humour, patience, courtesy, communication skills, respect for other photographers' intentions, a reasonably thick skin... and willingness to put a lot of time into it. Typically I guess we all spend at least 20 to 30 minutes on each upload that we comment on, and background discussion can also be time-consuming.

We do keep an eye open for members giving constructive advice on a regular basis. It would be good if more people nominated really helpful comments as constructive critique. We look out for comments that go the extra mile, make suggestions but also explain how and why.

It would also be good if more people ticked the critique box when uploading, you might be surprised at how much time has gone into exploring ways of encouraging this. (The Critique Gallery now appears under the Photos menu at the top of the screen, for example).

All of us will make suggestions on main gallery uploads where it seems appropriate but we are also aware that there are members who resent this, sometimes quite aggressively!

I hope that explains a bit of what goes on...

I am guilty of not ticking the box.
Probably I could count on one hand the number of times I have done so during my time here.

And when I did it was because I wanted some specific advice / feedback as the normal gallery one cannot guarantee any comments.

Maybe I can dig out some " troublesome " images and upload to the critique gallery now and again ?

Troublesome images and specific questions are very much welcomed in the CG - sometimes we have to try to guess what areas the OP wants commented on and it's not always easy!

Critique can be applied to any image regardless of whether it's in the Critique Gallery or not.
Indeed, some posters ask for it (critique I mean Wink) on their normal uploads. Unfortunately, even then few if any critique is offered by other members.
There's no barring anyone from offering their point of view, in a constructive way, amd that goes for images in the Critique gallery too. If somweone has specialist knowledge in a particular area relevant to the uploaded image it would be great to hear from them.

Precisely, and we like people to have something specific to ask as we know then how to pitch advice and feedback.

There haven't been too many uploads in the Critique Gallery this year admittedly but it does vary a lot over the months.
