Pop up flash doesn't!

I've had good service from my old Canon 40D.
Now the camera displays error code 5 and says the flash is obstructed (it isn't).
The advice on screen says to turn it off and turn it on again which does nothing.
I've ordered another camera but would be interested to know if there is a simple fix for this problem.
Thanks for any help.

I remember seeing something about the spring clips on the flashmount bcoming stuck and the camera thinks that there is a flash connected which prevents the pop-up flash from activating. You could try cleaning the hotshoe mount to make sure the spring clips are functioning as they should.

Also i think there is a microswitch on the hotshoe that is pressed when there is a flashgun connected. That may be stuck.

Thank you for that - sounds feasible - I'll give it a go.
Thanks again. I'll report back.

Maybe I haven't done a good enough cleaning job but the problem persists.
Thanks anyway.

If you go into Youtube and type in Canon error code 5 flash there are some videos there that say they fix the problem. Russ

Thanks, Russ - I'll look into it!

The video to which Russ referred is quite easy to follow.
However, I found that once I had 'assisted' the thing to pop up a little WD40 on the bits I could see was sufficient.
