There has never been a time where photography was used or more needed than it is now.

The 'professional model', however, has changed. Try and make a living like it was 1985 and you'll fail.

However, even then cold callers were generally unwelcome. 😉

Its surprising how many full time professionals take mediocre photographs outside their chosen speciality (and how few of those images that they make their living from would receive scant attention here or from competition judges)

The key does seem to be relationship management and knowing exactly what the client wants, then providing that at a price and manner they find acceptable

It's not surprising at all. If you're referring to newspapers. Newspapers (particularly the tabloids) thrive on mediocracy, they see their target audience as living their lives through the television set, and set their "news" agenda accordingly. Consequently, unless your picture contains an "A list celebrity" doing nothing in particular, it's unlikely to get a second glance from a tabloid picture desk.
