Problem with CC 2021 Layers

Hi, I’ve just started to use the new 2021 version of Photoshop and was interested to see how good the colourisation filter worked.
I like restoring old photos and occasionally do some colouring, although it takes me ages loading solid colours and blending the various colours within the pictures. Anyway I tried the filter and it’s not really much good. A couple of pictures were acceptable, but I couldn’t get into the resultant image to fine tune it.
So I decided to do a comparison by doing one the ‘old fashioned’ way, but I ran into problems.
The main one being that I cannot add a solid layer in order to start the process.
Back to CS 6 and works a treat! So I opened one created with CS 6 in CC 2021 and it opened with all of the layers showing, but I couldn’t open the colour to do any adjustments, or launch a new slid colour!
Anyone else tried to do anything similar? Is it me or is there a problem with Adobe?

Apparently there is a problem with some Graphics Processors. You may find that it works better if you turn off your graphics processor.

Quote:I cannot add a solid layer

That's one of the problems that I'm having.

The other options; gradient and pattern are OK but if I ask for a solid colour, there's a very brief flash across the image, then nothing.
I have the Graphics Processor switched off; in fact I've always kept it switched off, as switching it on just causes more problems.
In fact, in the Graphics Processor dialogue, two of the checkboxes are greyed out. Now, that doesn't particularly concern me as I don't use it anyway but it might have some significance.

I've still got the final incarnation of v.21 on here; which also doesn't work properly but at least the Solid colour layer does so between the two applications, I'm able to work around everything although, obviously, it would be nice if, just for once, Adobe could release some software that we could rely upon from the word go.

They're quick enough to take our money . . .

Jestertheclown, that's exactly what happens, a brief flash when selected, but nothing pops up, and as you say all of the other options work. I have been really pleased overall with Photoshop since joining the subscription versions, but this is real backward step.

Anyway, back to the problem, how do I turn off Graphic Processing? it's worth a try.

Got to Edit>Preferences then when Preferences opens go down the menu on the left hand side until you get to 'Performance' and when that opens the Graphic Processor is at the top right hand side.

I don't know if it would make a difference as I am not having this problem but have you tried adding a blank layer and filling that layer with a colour with the 'Bucket fill'

It hasn't made any difference here but you never know . . .

I have just wasted about 4 hours on the Adobe helpline with them remotely 'taking over' my PC, not at all impressed, kept me waiting between trying things out. No progress made now I can't even open CC2021 due to 'cannot carry out the command due to program error. Then their 'control' dropped out.
What a good job I didn't delete CS6 though.

I have just discovered for Dabber, who I think is wishing to colourize a photo, that in the Neural filter, Beta section there is a colourize tool. May need some playing with (or watch a few YouTube videos) but it may solve your problem.

If there is a problem with PS 2021 you could go to the Creative Cloud manager and uninstall and reinstall. Depends on how much you wish to stick with it I suppose.

I gave up after about fifteen minutes. I was asked to wait for an assistant to attend me but they didn't specify for how long.
I made the decision for them.

Quote:I can't even open CC2021 due to 'cannot carry out the command due to program error.

I had that when I first installed it.
After removing/reinstalling three or four times; I've actually lost count, it decided to open, then I got that same message when it refused to close. I had to use Task manager to shut it down.
Two or three more reinstals and it finally opens and closes as it should.
I don't really suppose you'll want all that agro but it finally worked for me.

Quote:What a good job I didn't delete CS6 though.

At the moment, as you know, I'm having to use two programmes to get the results that I'm paying to get from one and I've got six months left of my subscription.
I do, however, still have the installation files etc. for CS6; I know it still works as I reinstalled it the other day. If these so-called updates aren't going to get any better, then I can see me going back to it.
I have no use for or interest in Lightroom so without Photoshop, I don't need the subscription.

Edit:
Ae you still able to reinstal CS6, should you ever need to?

The neutral filters crashed my graphics driver - mines a new PC, looks like they have some bugs to fix.

Persevere - I think it is worth it as there are some fun things and also some amazing things. I have a photograph of my granddaughter and her (not now but then) new husband in B&W and put it through the 'Neural' colourize filter and it was to me quite amazing as their skin tones had been matched almost perfectly. And this is still in the beta phase so it will be better (hopefully) when it's completed.

I will wait until hearing that there are fixes. It does not sound as if I need to use any of the new features anyway and I do not want to turn the Graphics off. LR and PS have needed the Graphic card to run efficiently for some time so turning off will slow it down.

I can't speak for Lightroom as I don't use it but regarding Photoshop, only certain tools require the use of the Graphics card to work and others are alleged to perform more quickly if it's switched on but if you're not using those particular tools, it makes no difference.

i had issues with my graphics driver before I bought a new PC, Both Lightroom and Photoshop would constantly crash. Adobe tried to help and they were really helpful but I'm afraid that I just had to admit defeat and upgrade. No problems now except for some features in the new update. Its a joy to use PS and LR again, I can bounce from one the other with lightning speed. Once they get these bugs ironed out PS will become exciting again!
