PS Elements 5 problem saving edited work

Hello all, I hope its been a good christmas.
I put elements 5 on my pc a couple of weeks ago and only really started to use it over christmas.
Last night I was unable to save an image in the full editor workspace, and then I got the message that PS had encountered an error and needs to close. This happened a couple of times after some editing of an image.
Today I just tried to crop and save an image and got this message
"there was a problem accessing the organiser catalog, it may be in use by another process, or a disk error occurred."
The message persists despite a restart.
Therefore I am unable to save any edited work, curiously if I make changes in the RAW editor, these changes remain.
I have no problems accessing images in the organiser section of PS, and don't run other programs whilst I use PS.
Any ideas or help much appreciated.
Many thanks
Dave

Dave,
Were you working on an image on a cd or was it on your hard drive? Photoshop won't save changes to an image if it is on a cd. Don't know if this is the case with your image. Just trying to think what else it could be?
Have you set your preferences so that Photoshop uses the most RAM that is available?
