I am a Canon user and chose the G10 as a travel light camera for a variety of reasons :-

Reasonably compact, fits in a small case on belt, not pocketable though

Will take Canon speedlights, flashes on compacts can be poor

Canon Raw files suits my processing style with DPP

Relativey discreet at night when taking longer exposures with tripod

Negative aspects though are low light /high ISO capability, and shutter lag, but then again thats why we have DSLRs

And if the Martians land you've got video, serioulsly the only real negative is the high ISO issue I wouldn't use mine beyond 200.

In good light its a great little camera, I also have a cheap fish eye and adapter for it and thats great fun.

I also looked at the panny but the G10 zoom range also suited me better
