Quotes don't say who is being quoted in Forum Topics

I suppose I haven't been spending as much time here as I used to, but I now find some threads rather difficult to follow.
When a comment is quoted the 'identity' of the member quoted isn't included so I find it difficult to relate to who said what. Could be an age thing, I guess.
Certainly for me it would make threads easier to follow - and if coming into a thread that has been going for a while to pick up 'who said what to whom' and possibly even join in.
So I think it would be better if the 'quotee' identity were included in the quote. Any thoughts?

I agree.
On another forum, the quote box has the username of the one quoted and a little ↑ arrow, which, when clicked, takes you to the whole comment being quoted.
I personally think it would be a welcome addition here, especially when threads are several pages long.
I'll put it forward to WebDev to consider...

All very well, but will only work if you hit the quote button to quote the entire message.
If I cut and paste and use the quote button in the Add Comment tools, like this:
Quote:I personally think it would be a welcome addition here
then it still won't work. And if it did, what would you expect to see?
Quote:Saltireblue: I personally think it would be a welcome addition here
Since the quote button just puts stuff into the Add Comment box, it would be possible to change the text and attribute a quote to someone who didn't make it:
Quote:Saltireblue: I personally think that's a ridiculous idea
Could get difficult...

Quote:Yeah this was raised in the office yesterday, the copy and paste route would be without the 'Quotee'.
Members using the 'Quote Comment' option in the dropdown would get the Quotee info and the ability to adjust to the section of quote required.
Rick
I hadn't realised that was there. Thanks Rick - very helpful

This is all true, and I believe can and does happen occasionally at sites that have the 'quote option with quotee.' The vast majority, though, seem to 'play fair' and when foul play happens other people commenting on the thread often pick it up (the quotee or alleged quotee being an obvious candidate for noticing the 'error.' it's getting Yes Ministerish) - then an argument ensues.
Not a perfect feature unless the quotation is somehow protected, which I've never seen, but as we are all mature individuals.....

One thing I would like to add, though, is that if somebody has misquoted then the usual response is to refer to the original post so that others can see and this I believe is one of the things that inhibits misuse: too much egg on face for the naughty person. Unfortunately, I don't see how that can be done here - a 'post number' in the thread to refer to would solve that.

Your numbering idea is a good one. At lease one could see the progression in the quotes. I, too, have trouble following along in the conversation when this happens. Especially when quotes are not listed in chronological order. The conversation really gets difficult when there are successive quotes, all out of order, which makes following the 'logic' almost impossible at times.
But, I would like to say that leaving the identity of the speaker out is somewhat a good, if not confusion contributing factor, idea. Too often I have noticed that what is said is sometimes condemned not for what is said but, by who said it. It is sad that conversations often go down such a road. Thus it makes it easier to stick with the topic rather than turning to the 'who said what' that often results in negativity in conversations.
