Finally after nearly 5 years worth of use, my Nikon 18-70mm kit lens that came with my D70 has finally decided to stop working.

What are peoples recommendations for something to replace it. The only catch is that I intend to upgrade my camera body in the next 6 months to probably a D700, so will need a lens that will be suitable for full frame use.

Nikkor 18-35mm f3.5 ED if budget is tight (350 approx) otherwise THE one-and-only Nikkor 12-24mm f2.8 ED (1000+)

Sorry Mike but don't get the 12-24 if you're going to move onto the D700, get the cracking (and crackingly expensive) 14-24, it's sooo very good!

Sigma are just about to up their prices, so be quick if you go that route.

The Nikon 24-70 is also very good, but expect to pay more than a grand a lens in this range - 14-24, 24-70, 70-200.

Medium Format! Smile

This is my MF equivalent WA lens:
35mm HC

It makes the Nikon look cheap.

Cheers for the responses guys. I think I may have a look at the Sigma stuff, as strangely I can't justify spending so much on a Nikon lens.

I recently bought the Nikkor 16-85mm to use in place of my 18-70mm.
The extra reach at either end is a boon and it gives results equal to, if not better than the 18-70mm.

Don't know if it will work on a D700.

It's a DX lens only Merl - but looks excellent. I must take a closer look at that.

How about the Sigma 50mm f1.4 HSM great prime which has been rated as better than the Nikon 50MM AF-S and will work on the D70 and D700. Will cost about 350 so you will have some change left to buy the D700

If you want top performance at low cost, take a look at the old manual-focus nikon lenses. A few of them, the 85mm f2 and the 105mm f2.5 are as good with digital as they ever were with film and the wide aperture makes for great portraits.
