That`s not good.

Maybe it was your motherboard and CPU that was on its way out and not the psu, your psu would have been exhausting the warm air as well as bad smells.

I think you may be right. I have made the decision to go for new. Luckily I can get a refund on the PSU. I have rescued the hdd, dvd and RAM. I also have full cloud backup.

Nothing lasts forever 😊

I think I was first to mention the eight connector plug splitting into 2 fours Tongue

You are at the point where it starts to make sense to buy new instead of replacing parts BUT I would love to know how the local shop can say it's the CPU considering the machine doesn't power up!

There are lots of motherboard components that will fail before a CPU does.

They've not tried a new CPU in there to test their theory. Also I believe that many motherboards would still power up, even displaying BIOS and providing power to drives etc regardless of CPU problem.

A pal used to overclock his CPU and if it crashed it / caused thermal shutdown he'd still go into CMOS setup and revert settings.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your input.

That's the trouble isn't it? We're at the mercy of 'experts'. 😊

Chris does make a good point though, in all the years I`ve fixed or played with pc`s I`ve never seen one with both the motherboard and CPU blown, only motherboard`s and even then it was never the cpu socket, it was usually blown caps or something else.

Even if you replaced it with a fairly cheap budget orientated tower you could still be seeing a good performance boost on a 5 year old unit Smile

So, new PC up and running (8mb RAM. 3 TB storage)
Have a case for the old HDD, will test it out tomorrow. Fall back, everything is backed up through a Cloud backup.

Life is too short to hang about 😊

Although I have a tablet and a smartphone it's surprising how you miss that solid, permanent feeling of a desktop 😊
