Tragic - it seems comedians and comic actors are prone to private sadness.

I feel saddened by this news - a very talented man. I've just read the obituary on yahoo - one line stood out for me:

Quote:During a media tour for “Awakenings,” when director Penny Marshall mistakenly described the film as being set in a “menstrual hospital,” instead of “mental hospital,” Williams quickly stepped in and joked, “It’s a period piece.”

An actor with a sense of wit that was genuine. Note - I don't say a comic actor - he was so much more than that...

A friend of mine was in a London pub a few years ago, one of those with a stage for ad hoc acts. In walked Robin Williams who did an hour stint as a 'warm up' for his London Palladium show - he asked for a subject from the audience and rather than run a recycled 'names changed' template routine it was a genuine spur-of-the-moment performance. He is a keen show-goer and it remains one of his treasured memories.

The man was comic genius and, in an unusual move for an industry that is to ready to typecast people, the powers that be in the movie world took a risk and allowed us to see what a great actor he is as well: from transvestite nannies to tortured pyschopaths.

Truly upset by this awful news. A wonderful actor and a lovely bloke who always came across well on TV chat shows.

Yes, I agree. I used to play drums in a club that employed comedians from time to time. The best ones often seemed to suffer with anxiety off stage as if there was something on their mind that you'd never find out about and it was more than pre-performance nerves.
