Very sad news for all togs in that whitbys west pier has been closed off ,and it looks like the same fate as the east pier .

It was a bit of a dump in recent years - but still provided some interesting photo-opps. Still a lot in the Whitby area though. North Yorks is one of my favourite destinations in England, not least for seeing Alan Aykeborne plays in Scarborough.

Photograph taken Kodak Instamatic 126 on the 24th March 1973. A great place to visit.

The dolphins at the side of the swing bridge have also rotted away ,as have some of the huge upright timbers by the ice house.
Would have thought that all the Goth weekends etc would have brought more cash into Whitby ,so why haven't they bothered to maintain things ?
Wrecked by the Rector......LOLSmile

All down to Scarborough Council for lack of cash to spend on Whitby.Their argument is they have spent money in Whitby on a new marina for a few rich yacht owners....Phil. Still agreat place to photograph though

Afraid not Roy, just a cleric wanting some respect for the dead.

From now on, photography will be banned in the cemetery on the ground that it is disrespectful to the dead who are buried there.

“It was because it had become unbearable. I sat there one day and in half an hour nine photographers walked past me.

“The Goths stand, sit or even lie on the table graves. There are people in Whitby who had families there even though it closed in 1861 and they object to it very much.”

I'm not surprised about the graveyard ban.

Its a real shame Phil ,as a boy it was an amazing place,i count myself fortunate to have grown up there .But it hurts me seeing all this decay etc which could have been tended to before it got so bad .The council are def to blame for letting it do so .

Having visited Whitby on several occasions in recent years I would say that it is still a very vibrant coastal town.
If you want to see a seaside town that has really hit rock bottom my old home town of Margate must really take some beating.
